Welcome to challenge #2x01, "Selective Colouring"; this is "season 2" of icon_style!
For this challenge, each icon you make must use selective colouring; that is, most of the image is changed to a "false" colouring (usually Black-and-White, but it can be colourized in some other way) and the original colouring is "restored" in selected areas.
My apologies for the lateness of this, but we can still finish this in this month, so I'm going ahead. Go us!
Examples:
See http://www.selectivecolors.com/gallery.htm
and http://www.redbubble.com/selective-coloring
Techniques:
- layers
- layer masks
- desaturation
- colours
Useful tutorials:
- basics
- Gimp For The Artistically Challenged
- GIMP Selective Colouring Tutorial
- Photoshop Selective Colouring Tutorial
Rules:
1. From one to four icons can be submitted.
2. You have two weeks to submit the icons; that is, they are due onFriday 29th of May Sunday 31st of May (that's my time, Australian time, so for some of you that will be the 28th 30th).
3. Icons will be submitted in comments to this post. All comments will be screened, to preserve anonymity.
4. As soon as I can after the29th 31st, I will make a voting poll here. People will then have three days to vote.
There will be two sections in the voting: (a) "Best embodiment of style"; this you vote for whichever icon you think demonstrates the style/technique of the given challenge (b) "I just like it"; where you vote for whichever icon you simply like the best.
5. You are required NOT to post your icons anywhere public until after the voting is over, so as to preserve the anonymity of the entries.
6. When the voting is over, I'll announce the winners here. Discussion of the challenge will be encouraged, especially discussion and demonstration of techniques used. The entries will also be un-screened.
In short:
Due29th of May 31st of May, post entries here, don't show them elsewhere.
If you know any good tutorials for this challenge, please post a link.
And please pimp this far and wide!
Also, if you have any ideas for challenges you would like to see, don't hesitate to suggest them. No, I'm not running out of ideas, but feedback is good.

Date: 2009-05-15 11:04 am (UTC)I can't think of much.
- Multiple (usually two) images of the same person / thing?
- Animation using images and/or text?
- Comic books style (tutorial here)? Note that it does translate to GIMP; I've done it. There might be a better GIMP tutorial somewhere though.
