icon_styleHello all. Welcome to the Icon Style community, where "Style, not Substance" is our motto.
A lot of icon-challenge communities are fandom-specific, and while that's good, if one is interested in other subjects as well, those tend to get neglected.
This icon-challenge community is about stretching our creativity by giving challenges based on some style or technique, without saying what the icons have to be about. Icons can be from any fandom, or non-fandom, or whatever. I just ask that they be "work safe" as far as the content goes.
This is not an intense challenge community; I know you have a life and want to do other things as well. So each challenge will be monthly, lasting for a fortnight.
This is born of the LJ community of the same name http://community.livejournal.com/icon_style/; while we have a small and loyal group, it is too small to hit critical mass. I'm hoping that more people will join in here. Also, I'm looking for a co-mod to help with publicity.
These are the rules that have served us well so far.
1. From one to four icons can be submitted.
2. You have two weeks to submit icons for a given challenge.
3. Icons will be submitted in comments to the challenge post. All comments will be screened, to preserve anonymity.
4. As soon as I can after a challenge is due, I will make a voting poll. People will then have three days to vote. Any member of this community may vote; you don't have to have entered the challenge.
There will be two sections in the voting: (a) "Best embodiment of style"; this you vote for whichever icon you think demonstrates the style/technique of the given challenge (b) "I just like it"; where you vote for whichever icon you simply like the best.
5. You are required NOT to post your icons anywhere public until after the voting is over, so as to preserve the anonymity of the entries.
6. When the voting is over, I'll announce the winners here. Discussion of the challenge will be encouraged, especially discussion and demonstration of techniques used. The entries will also be un-screened.

Date: 2010-03-03 03:39 am (UTC)thanks for the invite to the comm. A question about each challenge--do you have to use all the techniques for each icon, or do you just use one technique for each icon? Or something else?

Date: 2010-03-03 05:01 am (UTC)Thus, this month's challenge is more of a "style" challenge than a "technique" challenge. We tend to have a mix of both. For example, Challenge 2x05 was more of a "technique" challenge, since you had to create icons with shadows in them. Of course, there's more than one technique for adding shadows, and more than one kind of shadow, but it was still technique-oriented. But, again, the list of techniques in that challenge were intended to be helpful suggestions of where to start.
