Thank you, everyone! Thank you especially for the overwhelming vote. Wow.
I've also revealed the entries in the challenge entry post.
Now, discuss! How did you come up with the ideas? How did you create them?

That one was hard... but the Sentinel icon was fairly simple in itself, two screenshots that go together sooo well, laid over a rectangle based brush so I could place 'em, then I put the bush on it again.
The Khayyam one - I got the idea when looking at a precious comp, just a made the picture (already faded) much paler, popped it underneath the first and cut out the rectangles.
The one that was hardest - the town & country one - never really worked... oh well.

Date: 2009-02-20 11:29 am (UTC)The Romana icon was complicated enough that I've gone and written a tutorial for it. Note, however, that when I actually made the icon, there was a lot more faffing around and messing up and undoing things, because I kept on changing my mind about what looked good and what I wanted to do. The tutorial is much more straightforward than what I actually did.

Date: 2009-02-20 09:18 pm (UTC)The tiger icon came about because I was fiddling with textures in the pallet and there were tiger, cheetah and zebra patterns so I thought I'd see if I could do a multi animal icon. The trick was trying to find pictures that were similar enough to use - it's not easy getting animals to look directly at cameras ;) I just selected the images and expanded the selection by a pixel or two then set the texture as the colour and flood-filled the selection.
The blue rose was a base picture and I found a grainy texture, coloured it blue but then thought it was a bit sharp so I blurred the layer a few times with different settings and chopped a rectangle out.
The others I just found some textures stored in the corner of my pc and played around with colourings and lighting until I got it somewhere I liked.
